In 1962 the Mackle brothers bought 17,203 acres, filed for a planned unit development with 35,143 lots and named the area Deltona. The first Deltona residents arrived in April 1963.

With a current population of 87,000, Deltona is the largest municipality within Volusia County.  Due to its proximity to Orlando and its theme parks via I-4, the area grew very rapidly between 1970 and 2000, and Deltona has served as a bedroom community for commuters to Orlando. 

The Deltona Lakes PUD is mainly comprised of single family residential parcels with more than 35,000 single family lots. With over 33,000 developed residential units, residential land use dominates the City's development pattern. Some 4,200 vacant platted single-family lots remain from the Deltona Lakes PUD. The development pattern has been on a first come-first serve basis with the remaining residential lots.
